I don't find there is much nice in the big cities (except the people, who are lovely), but the small towns, rural areas and islands of Honduras have a LOT to offer a tourist. Roatan is a fantastic island for relaxing, snorkeling, scuba diving, etcetera. Comayagua has beautiful Semana Santa processions that are not nearly as crowded as those in neighboring Guatemala. It is absolutely true that Honduras is plagued by violent crime, but it is not specifically directed at tourists, and if you are a smart traveler (don't flash valuables, don't walk around solo at night) in the big cities, you are not likely to encounter problems. And the smaller towns, rural areas, islands, etc - the places you really want to visit - are dramatically safer than the three biggest cities.

Re: The Pastry Experience You Can’t Miss in Paris: Baking Macarons

Ah that looks amazing! I remember reading the Red Tent by Anita Diamant, and while there were obviously many ways that segregating women was meant to keep them down and make them smaller, or otherwise communicated the assumption that they were lesser, I think a core tennet of that book is how those women turned that space into a place of rejuvenation and strength, and I found my middle school-self longing for a bit of red tent camaraderie and woman-on-woman worship.
There is something worth digging into about separation for subjugation vs pedestaling, and how, throughout history, women (and other minorities) have taken actions that were meant to hold them back and turned them into a source of strength. Hmm, you may have planted the seed for a future piece from me...

Re: Making the Trip with Kids? As a sociologist, feminist and woman raised around Latino culture, but not of it- appropriation is something I wonder about. dia de Los muertos is very personal to me as I remember loved ones I miss, but of course being white- was wondering if it's unfair to participate at all... While I have always tried to be respectful, even with discretion it's hard to know where to draw the line. If I want to leave, I can just pack up. To me, travel is an escape because it is refreshing and it helps you realize how large the world is. When I stay in one place for too long, I tend to dwell on my problems. Once I travel, I am distracted in a healthier way because I realize that there are so many other places to see. However, I'm still working on being present when I'm at home. When I'm not traveling, I'm planning trips.

Your post made me think about what pushes us to travel in the first place. I have some food recommendations for you. Let's see: Sun in My Belly for breakfast, Barcelona (and other Inman Park locations) for tapas and a great local scene, Mary Mac's for our true southern food, and Krog Street and Ponce City are really trendy right now. Our Antico Pizza is famous, and get gelato while you're there. Sweet Auburn BBQ is my favorite, but there are a lot of good bbq options; no one can decide on the best. Head up Buford Hwy for all of the international options you could possibly want.

Re: Take Two! I'm currently living in Mexico and later this month, I'm heading to Patzcuaro where they have a pretty big ritualistic celebration for Dia de los Muertos. It's something I have wanted to see for a VERY long time but at the same time, am very conscious of appropriation and hope not to intrude on anyone celebrating/mourning their dead.

Re: Know Before You Go: Honduras

I've traveled to Honduras twice over the past year for work. I was primarily in Tegucigalpa, Comayagua and nearby farmland, and finally took my first trip to Roatan. The Bay Islands are just like any other island destination requiring travel smarts anywhere else in the world. The islands do not feel like the rest of the country and you barely need to speak Spanish or use local currency. If the Bay Islands are your only destination, fly directly to Roatan and avoid the bumpy flight from Tegucigalpa. Now, if you are traveling to Tegus, San Pedro, or elsewhere in the country, major caution should be exercised. Driving at night between cities should be avoided; taking a taxi from a trusted source is always advised. I've spent about two weeks in the capital and I've never been encouraged by local colleagues or saw the opportunity to walk around the capital city. I haven't found Honduras to have as many alluring tourist attractions as Guatemala, for example. If you find yourself in the capital city for work, definitely flee the city for the weekend or you may find yourself lounging about your hotel or the nearby mall for entertainment.

Re: Packing Up Your Life to Travel Long-Term; The Struggle Is Real

This is amazingly apt for me right now! I'm actually doing the same thing as you, in preparation for my move for Masters next year. It's not quite the same long-term travel as what you've got planned, I'm sure, but it'll still be 2 years abroad. All the things you've been doing to downsize your belongings... I just have to say that I can totally relate!

I started with my clothes. I'm most used to sorting and letting go of my clothes, since I do it at least once every quarter, so I figured they'd be the best place to start. But, since I'm also trying to raise funds for my Masters, instead of sorting them as just "to donate" or "to throw away", I've added in a category of "to sell".

After clothes, I went through almost everything else in my room -- little knick-knacks on my dresser, piles of make-up that I've never used (and still in their boxes even), accessories and jewelry, etc. Of course there were those knick-knacks that I only kept because someone gave them to me (you know what I mean), but I figured that someone else might get better use of them so out they go. The rest, i.e. the stuff I just could not give away, I collected all the scrapbooks and the like and put them into 1-2 boxes, for leaving with the family, as you did as well. :D

And, just recently, I've gone through through my books. I sorted them with those that I am definitely keeping, those I hope to read before I leave next year, and those I know I won't read (at least not now). Thankfully though, I didn't really have to give away any books, as we have a shared family bookshelf, so I just fit them in there instead of in my personal shelves.

My goal at the start of all this was, when I leave, whatever I don't take with me, I am either selling, throwing, or giving away. While it is hard to get rid of EVERYTHING, sometimes, it can be liberating too. I'm actually excited to get rid of all the "junk" I've accumulated over the years and start afresh. Do you feel that way too? :)

Re: Know Before You Go: Honduras

After reading the horror stories of Honduras, I still took the plunge and lived there for a month on Roatan. I would go back in a heartbeat. On the island, use caution as you would anywhere. I never felt particularly unsafe even as a solo female traveler.
